Sunil Kumar Das

Sunil Kumar Das was an eminent Indian sculptor whose work made a significant contribution to contemporary Indian sculpture. Born in Kolkata in 1952, he graduated from the Indian College of Art and Draftsmanship, Kolkata, in 1975, and later pursued Advanced Studies in Sculpture at Kala Bhavan, Visva-Bharati University, Santiniketan, under a Government of India National Cultural Scholarship.

Working primarily in bronze and stone, Das developed a distinctive sculptural language that blended modernist abstraction with figurative expression. His sculptures are recognized for their harmonious interplay of form and space, where simplified human and animal figures convey strength, movement, and emotional depth through refined craftsmanship and elegant composition.

Over a career spanning more than four decades, Sunil Kumar Das exhibited extensively across India and earned recognition for his artistic achievements. His works form part of important public collections, including the National Gallery of Modern Art, New Delhi; Punjab Museum, Chandigarh; Lalit Kala Academy, New Delhi; and Birla Academy of Art & Culture, Kolkata. 

He was also honored with several prestigious awards, including recognitions from the West Bengal State Academy, Lalit Kala Academy, Tata Steel Sculpture Camps, and the Surendra Paul Award.

Today, Sunil Kumar Das's sculptures continue to be appreciated by collectors, galleries, and institutions for their originality, technical excellence, and timeless artistic expression. His legacy endures through a body of work that reflects a lifelong dedication to sculptural innovation and an enduring contribution to modern Indian art.
